The final exam formula
Your final course grade is a mix of your current grade and your final exam score, weighted by how much the final counts:
Needed = (Goal − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight
Use decimals for the weight (20% = 0.2). If the answer is over 100%, the goal can't be reached on the final alone; if it's 0% or below, you've already secured it.
Final exam questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Take the grade you want, subtract your current grade times the share of the course that isn't the final, then divide by the final's weight. For example, with an 85% now, a final worth 20%, and a goal of 90%: (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110%. With a goal of 80% instead: (80 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 60%.
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?
It means the goal isn't reachable on the final alone unless your teacher offers extra credit or curves. Try a lower target, or ask whether any remaining assignments, retakes, or extra credit could raise your current grade first.
Where do I find my final exam weight?
It's usually in your course syllabus, often listed as a percentage like "Final exam: 20%". If your class uses weighted categories, the final category's weight is the number to use. If you can't find it, ask your teacher.
Does this work for college classes?
Yes. The math is the same for high school and college courses as long as you know your current percentage and how much the final is worth.
