How to calculate your GPA

  1. Convert each letter grade to grade points using the scale below.
  2. For weighted GPA, add 0.5 for Honors or 1.0 for AP, IB, and dual-enrollment classes.
  3. Multiply each class's points by its credits.
  4. Add those up and divide by your total credits.

Example: an A in AP Biology (4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0) and a B in English (3.0), both 1 credit, gives a weighted GPA of (5.0 + 3.0) ÷ 2 = 4.0 and an unweighted GPA of (4.0 + 3.0) ÷ 2 = 3.5.

GPA questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each class's letter grade is converted to grade points on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with plus/minus steps in between). Each class's points are multiplied by its credits, added together, and divided by your total credits.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA treats every class the same on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes. This calculator adds +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB, and dual-enrollment classes, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0.

Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?

Both, and many colleges recalculate GPA using their own rules. Reporting both, along with the rigor of your schedule, gives the clearest picture. Always check how each school you're applying to handles it.

Does my school use this exact scale?

Grading scales vary by school. This calculator uses the most common US 4.0 scale with plus/minus grades. If your school uses a different scale or weighting, your official GPA may differ slightly.

What about classes worth 0 credits?

Set credits to 0 and the class is left out of the GPA average entirely, which is how most schools treat ungraded or 0-credit periods.
