For parents and schools
How StudentVision keeps students safe
StudentVision is a study planner used by middle school, high school and college students. These are the protections in place today. Most of them are enforced on our servers, so they can't be switched off from the app.
Age check and students under 13
- Everyone gives a date of birth when they sign up, or the first time they sign in if their account is older. It's never shown on their profile.
- If a student under 13 signs up with email, no account is created and nothing they typed is saved.
- If an under-13 account already exists (for example from a Google sign-in), it's paused: nothing else in the app loads, Canvas and calendar syncing stop, and StudyAI is off. If a parent doesn't approve within 30 days, the account and its information are deleted.
VisionChat for students under 18
- Direct messages and calls only with accepted friends. A student has to accept a friend request first.
- No suggestions of people they don't know. Other students can find them only by typing their exact username.
- School-wide and grade-wide feeds are for adults only. Class chats and study groups are limited to students who joined that school.
- Phone numbers, email addresses and home addresses are blocked in chats and posts that involve a student under 18.
- Threats are blocked for everyone, along with limits on how fast anyone can message or post.
- Students can block anyone and report any message, post or account. Our team reviews reports and can remove content, send a warning, or suspend an account.
StudyAI
- StudyAI is an AI, not a person, and it can be wrong. It's tuned to admit uncertainty rather than guess.
- If a student mentions self-harm, abuse, or feeling unsafe, StudyAI sets the schoolwork aside and points them to a trusted adult and real help: the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741), the Childhelp hotline (1-800-422-4453), or 911.
- It coaches instead of writing essays or other work to hand in, and it won't help with a test a student says they're taking.
- It won't help with dangerous or illegal activities and never asks for personal information.
Data and privacy
- We never sell student data or share it with advertisers.
- Canvas access tokens are stored encrypted, and only our sync service can read them.
- Students can delete their account at any time; it's erased within 30 days.
- How StudyAI prompts are processed by our AI provider is explained in the Privacy Policy, section 5.
In a crisis
StudentVision isn't an emergency service. In the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line, or call 911 in an emergency.
Questions parents ask
Can a stranger message my child on StudentVision?
Not if your child is under 18. Direct messages and calls between a student under 18 and anyone else only work once they're accepted friends, and that's enforced on our servers, not just in the app.
What happens if my child is under 13?
StudentVision needs a parent or guardian's permission for students under 13. Until a parent approves, the account is paused and collects nothing new, and it's deleted after 30 days without approval.
Will StudyAI do my child's homework?
It's designed to teach, not to do the work for them. It explains, gives feedback on drafts, and works through practice problems, but it won't write an essay or discussion post to hand in or help during a test.
How do I report a safety concern or ask about my child's data?
Use the Report button in VisionChat for anything in a chat or post. For data requests or other concerns, email privacy@studentvision.app.
